Abstract

This article examines the contribution of economics to the analysis of decisions made by users of digital decision support tools (DSTs) to optimize crop protection. Starting from an economic and behavioral analysis of pesticide use by farmers, the authors analyze how farmers mobilize the information and recommendations provided by DSTs according to their attitudes to risk and their expectations and beliefs, notably about the reliability of the DST. The ex-ante economic assessment of user preferences for some DST features, and the ex-post evaluation of the impact of DSTs and their use, lead the authors to propose avenues of research using economics to improve the design of crop protection DSTs.
