Abstract

Thorstein Veblen est né en 1857 et est décédé en 1929. Il est fils d'immigré norvégien installé aux États-Unis. Il est dans la vie des idées un esprit « iconoclaste » et singulier, dont la relative ignorance résulte de ce qu'il n'aura pas fondé d'école de pensée, ni eût de successeur, à l'exception notable de John R. Commons et Wesley C. Mitchell. Au-delà de l'effet Veblen enseigné dans les cours d'économie, et de sa description de la société de loisir dont le chapitre sur la consommation ostentatoire reste ce que l'on connaît le plus, il est le père fondateur de l'institutionnalisme. Il est aussi un critique incessant des formes modernes du capitalisme.
