Abstract

This article examines the treatment of the colonization of West Africa in the Revue dʹÉconomie politique between 1887 and 1920. Our research led to three original results. Firstly, we have found that the colonization of West Africa was regularly debated, especially through columns and bibliographic bulletins, by the journal's leading economists, but also by non-economists. Secondly, the economic analysis of colonization was built on racist assumptions. Thirdly, despite a strong reluctance about the role of politics in economic colonization, the state is seen as the main colonial actor, because it must secure land ownership, ensure political stability, and promote colonial trade with the metropole in order to guarantee private investment. Economic colonization cannot come from private enterprises, in the most often discussed status, that of privileged companies, because they endanger national sovereignty.
