Abstract

This research aims to clarify the points of convergence between the digital and agroecological transitions in the French West Indian vegetable sector through a typological analysis of 407 farmers. We use the theory of technology appropriation to understand the plurality of digital uses. First, hierarchical clustering is used to create groups of digital uses. Next, a multinomial logit econometric model is used to explain the membership of each group. This original two-stage approach enables us to describe and explain the diversity of agricultural situations in Martinique and Guadeloupe. Our main results highlight the role of digital technology in supporting agroecology through the dissemination and acquisition of information. A greater ecologization of producers corresponds to a greater intensity of digital use in their farming activities. Intensifying the use of digital technology can therefore reinforce the dissemination of agroecological principles.
