Abstract

Cet article explore les étapes du processus de construction de la légitimité d'un jeune accélérateur d'entreprises implanté dans le sud de la France. Ces structures d'accompagnement sont devenues des fer de lance des gouvernements pour stimuler l'innovation et la création d'entreprises. Depuis les années 1980, on assiste à une explosion du nombre de structures d'accompagnement. 7 000 sont recensés dans le monde selon les derniers chiffres communiqués par la NBIA, l'association américaine d'incubateurs "National Business Incubator Association" (Lukes et al. 2019). Parmi elles, on compte 2 000 programmes d'accélération (Cohen et al., 2019). Les accélérateurs d'entreprise ont la particularité d'aider à "accélérer le succès de jeunes entreprises en création en leur apportant des services d'accompagnement spécifiques, focalisés sur l'éducation et le mentorat, durant un programme intensif d'une durée limitée" (Pauwels et al., 2016 : 13). La croissance importante du nombre de structures d'accompagnement (le cabinet de conseil Roland Berger (2019) indique que la population d'incubateurs et d'accélérateurs a été multipliée par 5 entre 2009 et 2018) s'est accompagnée d'une forte concurrence entre elles, chacune rivalisant de stratégie pour attirer les meilleures start-ups, gagner en visibilité et trouver un business model viable. Les structures d'accompagnement sont alors comme toutes les entreprises : des organisations en quête de légitimité.
