Abstract

Lewis se propose de donner un sens à la notion de convention de langage fondée sur la coordination des activités d'agents rationnels. Mais il doit pour cela utiliser une version de la théorie des jeux de coordination qui exige l'emploi de concepts problématiques comme celui de savoir commun de la rationalité des agents. De ce fait, la liaison qu'il tente d'établir entre convention et rationalité semble à la fois trop forte et trop faible. Deux séries de difficultés opposées surgissent en effet. La première souligne les obstacles à faire de la conformité à une convention de Lewis un comportement purement rationnel. La seconde montre que la convention de Lewis exclut les jeux de coordination dans lesquels la rationalité individuelle conduit à un choix sous-optimal.
