Abstract

The ISO 9001 standard was successful in companies and organisations in the early 2000s, a period marked by successive crises and the need to reassure internal and external stakeholders. Since then, the image of this standard has declined due to the low value-added tasks involved in ensuring its certification. The question of the return on investment of this voluntary standard still drives many managers and researchers today. We explore the case of an SME that is proactive in managing this standard and that operates in a highly regulated sector: the marketing and distribution of medical devices and articles. We present the results of a research-intervention that aimed to help this company highlight the return on investment of this standard and its contribution to sustainable and bearable socio-economic performance.
