Abstract

Online petitions are one of the most popular e-democratic tools and their use is currentlyincreasing. So far, the literature has focused on the success of these online petitions and on thefactors that can influence the number of signatures, but not on the psychology of potentialsignatories. This research aims at exploring the diversity of behavioral, affective, psychological and cognitive responses to online petitions, as well as their antecedents. To doso, we conducted a thematic content analysis of nineteen semi-structured individualinterviews. The results allow us to build an integrative model of behavioral, affective, cognitive and psychological responses, which takes into account the context, the petitiondesign and individual factors.
