Et tu fais quoi des passions, des sentiments et de la morale ? MARY.-Absolument rien ! Je m'en fiche ! C'est pas mon job ! Je suis économiste, pas thérapeute ! Je considère que tu es juste un être parfaitement rationnel ! (Fin scène 3) La Richesse des nations 33 (1776) est indéniablement l'ouvrage qui fait aujourd'hui la renommée d'Adam Smith. Avant d'être considéré comme un économiste, Smith fut pourtant, comme le rappelle la pièce, un philosophe réputé dans l'Europe des Lumières. La Théorie des sentiments moraux 34 (1759), son autre écrit majeur, participa de cette renommée intellectuelle. Basé sur la seconde partie du cours de philosophie morale qu'il donna à l'Université de Glasgow (1752-1764), l'ouvrage connut six éditions britanniques de son vivant, fut rapidement traduit en français (dès 1764) et discuté dans les salons philosophiques européens, notamment parisiens.
