Abstract

Peu d'auteurs ont eu autant d'influence sur l'économie que Ronald Coase. Il est en particulier à l'origine des notions décisives de coût de transaction et d'externalité, et plus largement de l'économie des institutions, au point de rencontre de l'économie et des sciences sociales. Cet ouvrage réunit les articles fondamentaux de Coase, dont "La nature de la firme", "Le problème du coût social", "La controverse du coût marginal" et "Le phare en économie", précédés par un chapitre introductif où l'auteur présente les articulations majeures de sa pensée. La portée de ces textes est immense et plus que jamais d'actualité. Coase y aborde, en économiste visionnaire, des questions essentielles : les externalités négatives (la pollution et la régulation des nuisances, dont le principe du "pollueur-payeur"), les services publics, ou encore l'arbitrage entre externalisation et internalisation des activités au sein de l'entreprise... Le monde des affaires est aujourd'hui largement modélisé au prisme des concepts clés qu'a introduits Ronald Coase.
