Abstract

Nous évaluons dans quelle mesure l'activité professionnelle dans le pays d'accueil peut influencer la santé des immigrés. A partir de l'élaboration d'indices mesurant plusieurs formes de pénibilité, nos résultats soulignent dans le cas français qu'en moyenne les travail-leurs immigrés se révèlent plus résistants face à la pénibilité professionnelle, tant physique que psychologique. Cependant, la surconcentration des immigrés dans les emplois pénibles atténue en partie les effets de cette meilleure résistance et explique largement deux phéno-mènes marquants : une détérioration moyenne plus rapide de la santé des travailleurs immi-grés et une persistance dans le temps des écarts de santé entre ces populations et les popu-lations natives.
