Abstract

This research deals with religious expression at work and its management, and This research deals with religious expression at work and its management, and particularly the question of requests for religious menus. We address this issue through a qualitative study by interviews and a documentary analysis which aims to identify the reactions empirically associated with a real or supposed project of implementation of such menus in organizations, and the ethical dilemmas induced for decision-makers. The results show that the reactions fall on a continuum of eleven types of four different natures : from favorable, through skeptical and neutral to unfavorable. The reactions appear to be more diverse in their negative aspect, and come from employees involved and not involved in this type of consumption. Finally, the ethical dilemmas of organizations when they address this issue or are confronted with it are described. The tension is strong between the desire to include and the fear of destroying the common, by this very process. Our work leads to managerial recommendations, in favor of a common ground strategy.
