Abstract
In France, Article 7 of the "Charte nationale de déontologie des métiers de la recherche (2015)", currently signed by more than 60 institutions, states that "Ethical rules must be integrated into the training programs, in particular within the master's and doctoral programs, and their learning must be considered as participating in the mastery of the specific research field." In addition, the ministerial decree of May 2016 setting the National framework for training and the modalities leading to the delivery of the National doctoral degree, stipulates that doctoral schools "ensure that each doctoral student receives training in research ethics and research integrity." In this context, it seemed relevant a few years later to draw up a sufficiently exhaustive map of training and specific programs in research integrity and research ethics, in order to better identify them. To this end, a working group involving members of the French network of research integrity officers and of the French doctoral schools network, together with the French office for research integrity has designed an online survey that was sent to all the French higher education and research institutions, research integrity officers network, and doctoral schools network in late 2019. One hundred and twenty responses corresponding to 109 separate institutions were collected. Out of these 109 respondent institutions, 72% have implemented training in research integrity and ethics for doctoral students; this figure rises to 94% if the scope is limited to the 51 respondent universities. These results confirm that these initiatives are now widely deployed. Moreover, half of the 109 responding institutions offer training for staff other than doctoral students. The characteristics of the doctoral training courses offered by 48 of the responding universities in terms of format, language, disciplinary mix, subjects covered, validation system and evaluation method are briefly presented in this document. A more detailed report will soon be available on HAL. Beyond the numerical results confirming the actual implementation of training in research integrity and ethics at the national level since 2016, this survey allows us to draw up a more qualitative representation, taking into account both common modalities and local specificities, and allowing us to suggest avenues for further thoughts in this area.
