Abstract

La idea del desarme para el desarrollo se estudió especialmente a principios de los años 80, por iniciativa de las Naciones Unidas. Puso de manifiesto el peso económico de la carrera armamentística de las grandes potencias, mientras que la ayuda al desarrollo se mostraba muy insuficiente. En el marco de los acuerdos internacionales, se trataba de que los países desarrollados altamente militarizados redujeran la financiación de su armamento y aportaran parte de ese ahorro para apoyar el desarrollo de los países del Tercer Mundo. A continuación, se formularon tres preguntas principales. ¿Es el armamento un freno al desarrollo? ¿El desarme sólo tiene efectos positivos en las economías nacionales de los países desarrollados? ¿Puede el desarme ir acompañado fácilmente de transferencias de recursos de los países desarrollados a los países en desarrollo?
