Abstract

Au cours de la dernière décennie, le mot « capitalisme » a fait un retour remarqué dans le débat politique et dans la recherche. Ce livre s'appuie sur les travaux les plus récents en histoire et en sociologie économiques pour raconter les trois âges du capitalisme, de la fin du XVIIe siècle à nos jours.Ce récit permet de répondre à des questions concrètes et variées : comment la satisfaction des actionnaires est-elle devenue une valeur dominante ? L'ubérisation est-elle un retour au XIXe siècle ? En quoi le commerce d'esclaves a-t-il contribué à la naissance du capitalisme ? Une finance chrétienne ou musulmane est-elle possible ? Qui a conquis les droits associés au salariat, et comment ? On apprend aussi qu'il n'y a pas vraiment eu de « révolution industrielle », que les dilemmes des mouvements de consommation engagée vers 1900 ressemblaient à ceux d'aujourd'hui, ou encore en quoi la crise financière de 2008 diffère de celle de 1929.
