Abstract

Mill, Jevons and Marshall have opposing views on how womencan participate in the progress. Mill emphasizes the negative effects of thepersistence of gender inequalities; Jevons and Marshall would be in favor of astatus quo. These oppositions reflect profound philosophical divergences. While Mill's analysis is based on an utilitarian conception of the progress, those of Jevons and Marshall are marked by the influence of evolutionarytheories.
