Abstract

La distance aux villes peut être considérée comme un facteur déterminant des dynamiques démographiques et d'emploi des communes rurales et de certaines petites villes. Une typologie communale, basée sur le croisement type de communes (rurale ou urbaine) et la taille du "centre" de la zone de peuplement industriel ou urbain (ZPIU) à laquelle éventuellement elles appartiennent, a été mise en place pour tester cette hypothèse. Lorsque l'on est éloigné des influences urbaines, la dynamique démographique et l'évolution des emplois sont peu favorables : la crise de l'agriculture paraît principalement responsable. En revanche, quand on se rapproche des villes, la situation démographique et celle de l'emploi sont nettement meilleures, et ce d'autant plus que les villes d'influence sont plus peuplées : l'arrivée de nouveaux habitants compense largement les départs ; la croissance des emplois dans les services liés aux activités résidentielles et récréatives, le maintien de l'emploi industriel, voire même sa croissance en périphérie des grandes agglomérations, permettent de compenser une partie de la chute de l'emploi agricole.
