Abstract

Du point de vue agricole et rural, l'Europe centrale a toujours été considérée comme mineure. Or après l'adhésion des 10 pays d'Europe centrale et orientale (PECO), ceux-ci représenteront 100 millions d'habitants, dont 40 de ruraux et 10 vivant de l'agriculture. L'élargissement provoquera une grande mutation et poussera la Politique agricole commune (PAC) à se poser de nouveaux problèmes, au-delà de ceux de l'Agenda 2000 et de l'Organisation mondiale du commerce (OMC). Ce processus d'élargissement risque aussi de se poursuivre à l'Est de l'Europe. Aussi de longues périodes de transition post adhésion seront probablement nécessaires pour que les ajustements agricoles et structurels puissent se réaliser sans ralentir l'intégration économique.
