Abstract

Le débat quant au rôle du savoir sur le processus de la croissance économique a connu une ampleur considérable, tant par l'importance de ses applications en terme de politique économique que par le nombre d'analyses théoriques et empiriques auxquelles il a donné lieu. Ainsi l'argumentation selon laquelle les modèles de croissance endogène expliquent la croissance économique de long terme est souvent avancée. Les auteurs affirment que la production de savoir induit une croissance économique auto-entretenue. Cependant, malgré de nombreux développements théoriques, les tentatives de vérifications empiriques se sont heurtées à de sérieuses difficultés méthodologiques. Le premier et principal écueil concerne la façon dont est évalué un bien immatériel, une grandeur incommensurable telle que le savoir. De plus, une large majorité des tests empiriques réalisés à ce jour porte sur la place des facteurs dans la croissance ou sur des études de type "cross-section countries" effectuant des comparaisons internationales sans pour autant s'interroger et apporter des éléments de réponse sur le fait que le savoir puisse induire ou non une croissance économique de long terme. Partant de là, l'objectif principal de ce travail est de tester empiriquement les modèles de Lucas (1998) et de Romer (1990), afin d'apporter une justification ou une infirmation sur la probable nature endogène du processus de croissance économique induit par la production du savoir. Sa nouveauté est d'utiliser, pour tester l'hypothèse même de croissance endogène, des statistiques originales concernant l'Allemagne de 1872 à 1989.
