Abstract

L'analyse des marchés de la fin du XVIIIe siècle et du XIXe siècle offre des représentations théoriques plurielles du mécanisme concurrentiel. Les termes génériques de concurrence ou d'équilibre dissimulent des difficultés et des divergences d'analyse. L'étude de l'équilibre diffère selon que l'analyse est classique ou néo-classique, que la perspective est d'équilibre partiel ou d'équilibre général, que l'équilibre est défini comme un vecteur de prix ou le résultat d'un marchandage. L'analyse des processus comprend la gravitation classique, le tâtonnement walrassien ou le recontrat d'Edgeworth. Les différentes analyses de la concurrence imparfaite envisagent la concurrence soit comme le cas général auquel les imperfections sont des entorses, soit comme un cas limite vers lequel la concurrence imparfaite tendrait en présence d'un grand nombre d'agents.
