Afro-pessimisme ? Oui, par respect. Éditorial

Abstract

Dans l'éditorial de la revue électronique Clio en Afrique (automne-hiver 1997-1998), Catherine Coquery-Vidrovitch publia un éditorial intitulé : « L'afro-pessimisme au seuil du troisième millénaire ». Son article développait une vision résolument optimiste de l'avenir de l'Afrique, critiquant l'afro-pessimisme de droite. En réponse et également en éditorial, Michel Cahen souligna que si l'afro-pessimisme a été inventé par des courants américains droitiers, il y a aussi – souvent parmi les gens de gauche – un discours afro-optimiste conformiste qui se satisfait des quelques éléments positifs pour mieux détourner les yeux de la gênante réalité impérialiste. Or nous sommes toujours à l'époque historique de l'impérialisme, qui donne à l'Afrique une place dans l'économie-monde bien incompatible avec un développement réel. Si les Africains sont fondés ainsi à être « afro-pessimiste par révolte », les Blancs du Nord devraient au moins être « afro-pessimistes » par respect. Le débat rebondit dans le n° 6 de Clio en Afrique. Pour des raisons techniques, l'article de Michel Cahen, daté du 8 juillet 1998, ne fut publié qu'au cours de l'hiver 1999, dix-mois plus tard (n° 5).
