Abstract

The increasing use of project management as a mode of action leads us to wonder how supply chains are constituted, organised and piloted in temporary organisations. To answer this question, we take a close look at the humanitarian supply chain, which has particular characteristics due to its dynamic and ephemeral character, but also because of the unpredictability of the demands to be managed. Then we analysed the theories relating to temporary organisations and dynamic capabilities. We gauged what role logistics services providers could play in the humanitarian supply chain. Finally, we formulated a set of propositions and we elaborated a tentative model for this supply chain to be piloted by a 4PL (Fourth Party Logistics) service provider in ‘Plug and Play/Unplug' mode.
