Abstract

This article investigates how multinational firms combine various control and coordination mechanisms to maintain control over their subsidiaries in China. We interviewed 22 expatriate managers in China who are in charge of 12 French and 10 Japanese subsidiaries. A content analysis reveals four main dimensions of control: the capital stake, expatriation, formalization of the organizational structure and training of local employees. We document managerial practice along the dimensions of control and compare the Japanese and the French systems of international control.
