Economic determinants of male farmers's marital status

Abstract

Dans plusieurs pays d'Europe de l'Ouest, le célibat masculin prolongé ou définitif est beaucoup plus fréquent en agriculture que dans les autres secteurs d'activité. L'hypothèse de l'auteur est que cette disparité matrimoniale s'explique partiellement par une inégalité dans les capacités de gain. Ceci est testé pour la France : une liaison négative apparaît entre le taux de célibat des agriculteurs, d'âge moyen ou élevé, et un indicateur de leur revenu agricole. Les facteurs qui produisent l'inégalité des chances matrimoniales confortent l'idée que la disparité économique est d'abord une cause, tout en pouvant être aussi un effet. Ce que l'on sait des comportements suggère une détermination par un contexte socio-historique.
