Off-farm work decisions of French agricultural households

Abstract

Le modèle du ménage producteur et consommateur est appliqué pour expliquer la participation des exploitants agricoles français et de leurs épouses à une activité hors de l'exploitation. L'application économétrique basée sur un modèle probit bivarié montre tout d'abord que les comportements des deux époux ne sont pas indépendants. Les résultats montrent que l'exploitant agricole est surtout influencé par les caractéristiques de l'exploitation. Par contre, le niveau général de formation et les caractéristiques familiales ont un impact majeur sur l'activité professionnelle de la femme. Une comparaison avec les études appliquées à l'agriculture nord américaine permet de repérer les similitudes de comportement.
