Abstract

While theory building based on a single case study is well admitted in the field of strategic management, its methodological and epistemological underpinnings remain poorly explored. By considering the case under study as a " particular case among many other possibilities " [G. Bachelard 1966], idiographic investigations should attempt to go beyond the idiosyncrasy of the firm studied in order to generate a theory aimed at covering a wider scope. Because of its transformative aim, such a theory building enterprise directly reflects the creative path held by the researcher and his (her) own limitations. To show the contribution of his (her) theoretical framework and give room to contradictory de-bate, the researcher needs to make explicit the main generative mechanisms that guide him (her) in structuring a consistent set of conjectures.
