Abstract

L'article propose un modèle de tarification comportementale du marché du crédit renouvelable. Nous montrons comment les sociétés de crédit peuvent tirer partie de l'incohérence temporelle de leurs clients en proposant des crédits courts qui peuvent être reconduits, moyennant le paiement d'une pénalité. La pénalité est à la fois un dispositif d'engagement pour les clients sophistiqués et une source de revenu aux dépends des clients naïfs. L'équilibre concurrentiel est tel que le taux d'intérêt est en dessous du coût marginal et la pénalité est fixée de manière à ce qu'une fraction des emprunteurs soit conduite à la payer. Nous montrons que le modèle peut expliquer l'évolution du marché des cartes de crédit américain depuis la fin des années 1980.
