Abstract

L'élection de Luis Iñacio Lula da Silva à la présidence de la République brésilienne, au début de novembre 2002, a été perçue d'emblée comme un événement international extraordinaire. Bien sûr, ceci s'explique en bonne mesure par le destin personnel du nouvel élu : une enfance très pauvre, l'emprisonnement politique, le militantisme syndical puis politique à l'extrême-gauche, enfin les échecs électoraux répétés avant de prendre pied sur la plus haute marche du pouvoir. Dans une actualité à la fois tragique et volatile, le sentiment de vivre en direct le couronnement d'une histoire édifiante ne pouvait que frapper le public le plus large. Encore un peu et Lula deviendra le Nelson Mandela brésilien (...).
