Abstract

From 1965 to 1995, strong economic growth has been driven in French Polynesia by military expenditures of the Nuclear Experimentation Centre. The cessation of nuclear tests in 1995 raised awareness of the strong dependence of the local economy to military spending.The Territory must now adopt an economic strategy not based on a military rent any more, but rather on the competitiveness of its exports and tourism. For this to happen, major reforms are needed, such as an end to protectionism and less dependence on the wage bill of expatriate and local civil servants.
