The Links between Japanese Investments in Asia and De-Industrialization in Japan

Abstract

The strategy of Japanese firms has been to relocate low-value added activities in Asia while key activities were kept in Japan. The specific case of electronics industry shows the negatif impact of relocation on domestic employment. Almost the biggest firms are able to maintain employment levels in Japan despite large FDI, many SMEs are forced to relocate in peripherical areas of Japan or close down.
