Abstract

Michael Walzer est un philosophe contemporain de l'école "libérale" américaine, philosophe classé comme étant "de gauche". Son oeuvre est essentiellement dédiée à la philosophie politique et au questionnement des thèmes de la justice, de la tolérance à partir de la tradition pragmatique américaine. Il met en perspective les développements de la philosophie libérale contemporaine, en particulier celle du libéralisme communautarien comme celle de la perspective contractualiste de John Rawls. Il montre les limites sociales et pragmatiques de l'individualisme. Michael Walzer contribue ainsi à éclairer la question de la démocratie. Ses principales oeuvres sont: Sphères de justice, une défense du pluralisme et de l'égalité, traité sur la tolérance. Les thèmes débattus dans son oeuvre contribuent à la question des guerres justes et injustes, à celle de la place de l'Etat dans la société et du contrôle de son action et à celle de la liberté des communautés
