La durée du travail féminin en Europe: entre flexibilité et conformité

Abstract

Cet article présente une analyse de l'influence de l'arrivée des enfants sur les comportements d'activité féminins dans cinq pays européens. Les résultats d'estimations des effets de la présence d'enfant(s) sur l'activité féminine et la durée habituelle du travail sont présentés, différenciés selon le rang de naissance et l'âge du plus jeune enfant. Deux groupes de pays sont identifiés. Dans le premier (Royaume Uni, Pays-Bas, et Länder ouest allemands), le travail à temps partiel est est en grande partie liée à la formation de la famille, dès l'arrivée du premier enfant, et on observe une participation à l'emploi à temps plein croissante avec l'âge du cadet. Dans le second (France et Espagne), le travail à temps complet constitue la norme dominante, et c'est avant tout le nombre d'enfants qui influence la participation des femmes. Le rôle des institutions est discuté pour chaque pays.
