Abstract

Export-oriented multinationals have deeply changed the specialisation of the Central European countries by developing exports and imports of products with high- and medium-high skill and technology intensity. Based on the evolution of the export share of high- and medium-high-technology products, the comparative advantages in high- and medium-high- technology products and the utilisation of imports of these products, we show that the quality of specialisation by the Central European countries has dramatically increased since the mid-1990s. However, we also suggest that the low level of value added locally in the Central European countries, which is related to the decomposition of the value chain organised on a European level by the multinationals, is a fragile element of their international specialisation.
