Abstract

Les pauvres sont-ils les principaux responsables de la violence ? Les politiques de répression peuvent-elles être efficaces et réduire de manière significative les taux d'homicides ou ne faut-il pas repenser les modes de développement dominants dans ces pays ? L'objet de cet article est d'abord de faire un survol de l'état de la question, puis d'analyser et de discuter l'influence des différentes variables économiques sur le taux d'homicides à partir d'un test économétrique portant sur un certain nombre de pays d'Amérique du Sud au cours des années 1995-2000. Il s'agit, enfin, de montrer que si la violence et son essor ont très souvent des racines d'ordre économique, il est vain de limiter l'explication de ce phénomène à un déterminisme économique.
