Working mothers – do young children benefit?

Abstract

Dramatic changes in working patterns have occurred among mothers of young children, with employment rates doubling since the 1970s for those with offspring under five. More than half of mothers are now in work before their children begin school – unheard of a generation ago. But what is the effect on children? That depends on the timing and characteristics of parents’ work and the quality of care children of working mothers receive, say researchers.
