Early Nutrition and Cognitive Achievement in Pre-school Children in Peru (Nutrición temprana y desarrollo cognitivo en niños pequeños en el Perú)

Abstract

El objetivo del Documento de Trabajo 57 es examinar la relación entre desnutrición temprana de niños y rendimiento cognitivo en el Perú. Los datos provienen de un grupo de aproximadamente 2000 niños peruanos que son seguidos por el estudio de largo plazo Niños del Milenio. Los niños fueron observados en dos puntos del tiempo: en el año 2002 (cuando tenían entre 6 y 20 meses de edad) y entre los años 2006 y 2007 (cuando tenían entre 4 y 6 años de edad). El estudio encuentra que los niños que sufren de malnutrición temprana estarían en desventaja cognitiva, incluso antes de comenzar la vida escolar. Este estudio ha controlado por una serie de características del niño, del hogar y de la comunidad. Asimismo, el estudio explota la ocurrencia de eventos climatológicos negativos (temperaturas por debajo de niveles históricos) durante los primeros 24 meses de vida, como una fuente de variación cuasi-experimental en el estado nutricional de los niños observados en el estudio, lo que permite ser más convincente sobre la naturaleza causal de los resultados hallados.
