The impact of intimate partner violence on child development in Peru

Abstract

Los autores utilizan datos longitudinales de una cohorte de niños peruanos (n=1.720), seguida a partir del primer año de edad, para evaluar la asociación entre la VPI (violencia de pareja íntima) física e inducida por el alcohol contra la madre durante los dos primeros años de vida del niño, y los resultados cognitivos, socioemocionales y escolares de los niños entre los 5 y 8 años de edad. Se utilizan técnicas multivariantes de regresión para estimar la relación de interés, dado que permiten controlar por las características del niño, del hogar, y de la comunidad. Los investigadores encuentran que la exposición temprana a la VPI se asocia negativamente con los resultados cognitivos (puntajes en las pruebas de vocabulario y matemáticas) para todos los niños, y con la auto-eficacia para las niñas. No se encuentra ninguna asociación con la autoestima del niño y con la edad en los indicadores de matrícula escolar. Los efectos son mayores entre los niños cuyas madres están mejor educadas y viven en áreas urbanas. Los hallazgos se mantienen robustos en diferentes especificaciones y después de aislar los cambios en las variables relevantes a lo largo del tiempo.
