Directions in French Corporate Governance Since 1945

Abstract

From the end of World War I, France has been characterised by the increase of the role played by the state in the economy. In the middle 80s and the beginning of 90s, the conservative majority decided privatisations which translated a new orientation in matters of economic policy. But the French privatisations process did not entail a sharp departure from the previous model as they generated a cross-shareholding system in which the state still exerted an influence. Therefore, the French industrial system knows a lot of restructurations that will induce nuemrous changes. The internationalisation of firms and of their shareholders is process that will continue and will have consequences on corporate cultures. This article aims at describing the specific features of the current French governance system.
