Abstract

Por mucho tiempo se ha sabido que una buena nutrición es esencial para el desarrollo físico y cognoscitivo de los niños, pero las evidencias recientes arrojan nueva luz sobre el momento óptimo de las intervenciones para mejorar la nutrición infantil y los efectos a largo plazo de dichas intervenciones. Estudios recientes han demostrado que la subnutrición tiene toda una gama de consecuencias que no sólo impiden la nutrición y el desarrollo del niño en el corto plazo, sino que afectan también sus habilidades cognoscitivas y su productividad como adulto, con impactos económicos mensurables. Además, han demostrado que el período óptimo para la intervención de programas que previenen la desnutrición temprana y sus consecuencias negativas en la edad adulta va desde la concepción hasta los dos años de edad. Pasado este período, los efectos de la subnutrición son prácticamente irreversibles. Al abordar el grave y generalizado problema de la subnutrición en la primera infancia de muchos países pobres, los formuladores de políticas podrían maximizar la eficacia de las inversiones destinadas a lograr los objetivos de desarrollo del Milenio.
