Especialización productiva y asimetrías en las fluctuaciones económicas en las regiones europeas

Abstract

En este trabajo se explora la hipótesis de existencia de una relación inversa entre la especialización productiva de las regiones europeas y la simetría de las fluctuaciones cíclicas de las mismas. Para ello se construye un índice de asimetrías de las fluctuaciones cíclicas del PIB per capita regional europeo y, a partir del mismo, se contrasta la existencia de una relación entre la especialización productiva de las regiones y este índice. Por lo que respecta a la cuantificación de las asimetrías, del estudio se deriva la existencia de un patrón geográfico en las fluctuaciones cíclicas de las regiones europeas que sitúa a la cuenca mediterránea en los niveles más altos de asincronía. Por otra parte, la evidencia empírica encontrada confirma la existencia de una relación inversa entre especialización productiva y sincronía en el ciclo económico regional y la importancia del tamaño de las asimetrías dentro del propio país y en las regiones vecinas para explicar su magnitud en las regiones europeas.
