Abstract

Quantitative data, including Big Data, are increasingly used in economic analyses. In the international trade field, the application of AIS data will be informative, as it records traffic for all vessels around the globe for all ships above the threshold size. In this paper, we review the existing literature using the AIS data and conduct a preliminary first-step study on vessel speed changes for container ships and oil tankers. We also discuss issues and prospects for research with AIS data in international trade.
