Abstract

The focus is on India. In line with TRIPS, India has introduced a product patent regime in pharmaceuticals from 1 January, 2005. Will this lead to an increase in resources devoted to R and D by Indian companies for the development of new drugs suited to the needs of India and other countries? India has demonstrated strong innovation capabilities in developing manufacturing processes. Can such capabilities be utilized for developing new drugs particulary for neglected diseases? Can India contribute to lowring the cost of new drug development and hence make drugs more accessible?
