Abstract

This paper intends to give first a clearer overview of the political troubles that have affected this region since Independence by analysing the rise of the insurgency and giving the details of the numerous militant groups in the Northeast. It will give a general idea of the history, formation, capacity and threat posed by these ultra outfits which have at first strongly struggled for the recognition of their cultural rights and then for autonomy or clearly, independence. The focus will then shift to the degeneration of those sub-nationalism and ethnic separatism into mere criminal enterprises. Thirdly, the paper will try to analyse how the external links of those separatist and criminal outfits have fuelled the instability of the region. [ CSH Occassional paper No. 16].
