Abstract

The third paper aims to estimate the aggregate monetary size of giving and volunteering in Japan for 2002. Firstly, it aims to estimate the total sum of individual and corporate donations to the Japanese non-profit sector, and break down and classify it by International Classification of Nonprofit Organization (ICNPO). Secondly, the paper evaluates the financial value of volunteer labor, which like donations, will be presented in whole and through a break down by category. Recent nation-wide survey conducted by the Osaka University Center for NPO Research and information, as well as taxation statistics and the "Survey on Time Use and Leisure Activities" published by the Statistics Bureau. Findings show that donations in Japan are overwhelmingly contributed toward the fields of culture, recreation, education and research, while volunteer labor contributes overwhelmingly toward development, housing and other social services.
