Abstract

This paper evaluates convergence of per capita GDP among the Mexican states. The paper attempts to make two important contributions to the literature on convergence in México. First, it is used a yearly data base for a relatively large time span which allows the use of a time series approach and to better characterize the dynamics of output and to obtain more reliable estimates. Second, it is used a cointegration approach explicitly considering possible structural changes which, if ignored, can produce non negligible distortions. The results show that the dynamics of per capita GDP gaps of pairs of states exhibits structural change and seem to be consistent with processes with long run common trends rather than with absolute or conditional convergence.
