Abstract
Haiti: Economic evolution during 2008 and Outlook for 2009 Abstract: The external shocks that buffeted the Haitian economy during 2008 resulted in a steep slowdown of the GDP growth rate, which only reached 1.2% in contrast to 3.4% in the preceding year. Likewise, other macroeconomic indicators experienced a downturn in comparison to their performance in previous years: the GDP per inhabitant decreased from 1.8% to -0.5%, while the rate of inflation increased from 7.9% to 19.8%, and the small surplus observed in the current account of the balance of payments, equivalent to 0.2% of GDP, turned into a deficit of 4.9%.In contrast, the fiscal deficit of the central government decreased from 1.7% of GDP in 2007, to 1.4% in 2008.
