Abstract

Guatemala: Economic evolution during 2008 and perspectives for 2009 Abstract: In 2008, Guatemala's economy experienced a real GDP growth of 4%, a slowdown with respecto to the rate of 6,3% registered in 2007. This result was mainly attributed to decreased investment and the slowdown of private consumption. In 2008, as a consequence of the financial crisis of the United States, remittances experienced a downturn, reaching 11,3% of GDP. Nonetheless, they still contributed to financing part of the substantial trade deficit (15.2% of GDP). At the same time, the deficit of the current account of payments amounted to 4,8% of GDP, while the annual rate of inflation was 9,4%, due to the rise of international prices of food and oil during the first quarter of 2008. Tax revenue reached 11,3% of GDP, a percentage point less than in 2007, which increased the central government deficit to 1,7% of GDP, slightly above the level registered in 2007.
