Abstract
Cuba: Economic evolution during 2008 and perspectives for 2009 Abstract: In 2008, the Cuban economy experienced a growth of 4,3%, after having expanded 7,3% in the previous year, For the third consecutive year, the GDP per inhabitant grew at the same rate of GDP due to a demographic growth rate close to zero. The retail price index experienced practically no variation (-0,1), while unemployment was reduced from 1,8% in 2007 to 1,6% in 2008. In contrast, the fiscal deficit and the external deficit increased. The treasury surpassed a deficit equalling 3, 2% of GDP in 2007 to 6, 7% a year later. Meanwhile, the small surplus of the current account balance turned into a deficit equalling several points of GDP for the same period.
