Abstract
RESUMENDurante las últimas décadas, los países del Istmo Centroamericano han impulsado su inserción a la economía mundial al buscar en el comercio internacional estímulos a su crecimiento y desarrollo. En este documento se recogen las principales características del entorno internacional y los retos que implican para la estrategia de inserción internacional centroamericana: la creciente importancia de las economías asiáticas, la relevancia del sector servicios en el comercio internacional, el rol de Mercado Común Centroamericano (MCCA); en la expansión del comercio y el dinamismo económico de Panamá. Del mismo modo se abordan las vulnerabilidades externas de la región, como son los precios de energéticos, la volatilidad de los precios de los productos primarios y la dependencia de la IED para su crecimiento. Igualmente se presentan propuestas estratégicas para el futuro de la política comercial internacional del Istmo Centroamericano como respuesta a los retos señalados.ABSTRACTIn the last decades, countries from the Central American Isthmus have search growth and development stimulus through their active insertion in the world's economy. In this document a current characterization of the international arena is made, also the main challenges that it poses to the world's insertion strategy followed by Central American countries: increasing relevance of Asian economies, importance of trade in services, the Central American Common Market role for trade growth, and Panama's economic dynamism. Regional external vulnerability is also analyzed, including exposure to changes in energy prices, volatility of prices of primary products, and regional dependence for growth in FDI. Strategic proposals regarding international trade policy of Central American countries are presented in this document as response to the mentioned challenges.
