Abstract
The Dominican Republic : Economic evolution during 2006 and Outlook for 2007 Abstract: General features of the recent evolution In 2006, the economy of he Dominican Republic experienced strong growth. The gross domestic product (GDP) grew at a rate of 10.7 %, the highest in the past 19 years. Employment rose 4.8 %, representing more than double the growth of 2005. Despite the increase of the international oil price, inflation was subdued (5%). In contrast, the public sector deficit did not experience any improvement (3.7%) and the trade deficit increased reaching 15.1% of GDP. Growth during 2006 was characterised by the buoyancy of domestic demand. Authorities expect a more sedate expansion of the economy for 2007, forecasting a growth rate of 8 %,. Nevertheless data on economic activity for the first semester, suggest that growth could be higher. The inflation goal set for 2007 is slightly higher than in 2006 (5.5%), although it is unlikely to be met since inflation during the first quarter of the year, with respect to December, has already reached 3%.
